No more than 4,000 soldiers from Großdeutschland Division, surrounded by Soviet troops near Balga (East Prussia), were able to move to Pillau. The remains of the defeated division of the Großdeutschland until 25 April 1945 were defended in besieged Pillau, after which Soviet troops stormed this last fortified point of the Nazi Wehrmacht in East Prussia.
