On April 11, 1942, during an air raid, a bomb exploded in the area of the engine room of the destroyer Kingston, which was being repaired at the dock number 4 of the port of La Valletta in Malta. The Kingston destroyer rolled over and sank.
Earlier, on March 22, 1942, during a battle in the Gulf of Sidra, the Kingston destroyer received a direct hit of a 380-mm projectile from the Italian battleship Littorio. The projectile went right through and exploded overboard. The fire started in the boiler room and the flooding of the engine room. Despite this, the destroyer fired three torpedoes. The fire was extinguished, and the ship on one boiler was able to reach Malta.
