Eastern Front

German soldiers take a photo on a broken road during the fighting on the Eastern Front of Germany against the Red Army of the Soviet Union.

The Wehrmacht Oberfeldwebel (in the center of the photo, holding a cigarette) has a cord for marksmanship hanging on the right side of his tunic. Wearing a cord is not quite usual, since, firstly, these cords were not worn with the field uniform, and secondly, by the time the war on the Eastern Front began, awarding and wearing such cords had ceased.
