April 10, 1945 B-24 “Liberators” of the 464th US Army Bomber Group bombed German defensive positions north of the city of Lugo. B-24 No. 44-49710 “Black Nan” under the control of Lt. Col. James B. Gilson was the group’s leading bomber. The plane was hit by an anti-aircraft shell in one of the engines at the time of the bombing over the target. The Liberator crashed 20 seconds after a fatal hit.
In the last flight aboard the Black Nan, in addition to a crew of eleven, there was a weather specialist – 1st Lt. Edward F. Walsh. By coincidence, he was the only survivor of the entire B-24 crew.
