American destroyed B-17 “Flying Fortress” bomber (serial number 40-2074) from the 38th Reconnaissance Squadron at Hickam Field, Honolulu area after the completion of the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor.

The destroyed B-17 aircraft, under the command of Captain Raymond Swenson, was one of those who arrived in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack. He took off from the aerodrome in California the previous evening. On approach to Pearl Harbor at an altitude of 600 feet (200 m), the plane was attacked by two Japanese fighters, “Zero”. The landing was stiff and the B-17 broke in two. This destroyed B-17 Flying Fortress was the first American airplane attacked in the air in World War II.
