February 21, 1945 at the island of Iwo Jima, the Saratoga aircraft carrier was attacked by a group of Kamikaze “Mitate No. 2” consisting of 32 aircraft (12 Susei bombers, 8 Tenzan torpedo bombers and 12 Zero fighters escorting them). As a result of this attack, the aircraft carrier was seriously injured (123 people killed, 192 wounded, 42 aircraft burned or dropped overboard) and went for repairs in the US.
