American Convair B-32 Dominator heavy bombers stand at the airfield of the US Air Force Base Hickam field in Hawaii, USA, during World War II in the Pacific.
Although the most famous U.S. strategic bombers used during World War II were the B-17, B-24, and B-29, the U.S. Air Force operated many others that did not receive the opportunity to become famous for their combat exploits. One such design was the Convair B-32 Dominator, which entered service in the final months of World War II.
The history of the B-32 Dominator bomber began with the preparation of a successor to the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. This program eventually led to the development of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber, but in June 1940, the USAAF command assigned the joint factories to work on a competitive bomber project in the event of a delay in the XB-29 program.
