On the night of August 2, 1943, in the Solomon Islands area, the torpedo boat RT-109 commanded by John Kennedy was defaced by a Japanese destroyer Amagiri. The ship torn in half sank, two of the 13 crew members were killed. The surviving sailors swam to the nearby island, and John Kennedy, despite a severe back injury, carried a wounded mechanic and helped him to reach the land. For heroism and the salvation of people, John Kennedy received a medal of the naval corps.
