The commander of the 9th US Army, Lieutenant-General William Hood Simpson, presents the Order of the Legion of Honor to the commander of the 3rd Army, Hero of the Soviet Union, Colonel-General Alexander Vasilyevich Gorbatov. The Order has four degrees (for military personnel of various ranks – soldiers, officers, commanders, commanders-in-chief), A.V. Gorbatov is awarded the order of the degree of “Commander” (commander).

The 3rd Army commanded by Alexander Gorbatov participated in the Berlin operation. On May 7, 1945, army troops reached the Elbe River, where American troops were stationed.
