This photograph shows a Soviet KV-2 heavy tank captured near the city of Ostrov in the USSR on July 5, 1941, during the opening weeks of Operation Barbarossa — the German invasion of the Soviet Union. The tank belonged to the 6th Tank Regiment of the 3rd Tank Division and was knocked out during fighting with German forces on the Eastern Front.
The KV-2 was one of the most powerful Soviet heavy tanks of the early period of the Great Patriotic War and World War II. Armed with a massive 152 mm howitzer and protected by heavy armor, it was capable of resisting many German anti-tank weapons in 1941. However, its large turret, limited mobility, mechanical problems, and difficult operating conditions reduced its effectiveness in fast-moving battles.
The visible damage on this vehicle shows the realities of armored warfare during the first months of the German-Soviet conflict. A shell impact damaged the tank’s left side and disrupted its track system, leaving the vehicle immobilized on the battlefield. Although the KV-2 had exceptional protection for its time, it could still be defeated when isolated or attacked by concentrated enemy forces.
