Soviet Il-4T Torpedo Bomber Prepared for a Mission in Gudauta (1942)

This striking historical photograph taken in 1942 by legendary Soviet TASS war correspondent Yevgeny Khaldei captures naval ground crew preparing an Ilyushin Il-4T torpedo bomber for a combat sortie at the Gudauta airfield in Abkhazia, against the dramatic backdrop of the snow-capped Bzyb Mountain Ridge.

Operating as part of the 5th Guards Mine-Torpedo Aviation Regiment (5th GMTAP, formerly the 2nd MTAP) of the 63rd Bomber Aviation Brigade, Black Sea Fleet Naval Aviation, these long-range crews conducted hazardous anti-shipping strikes against Axis supply convoys along the Crimean and Taman coastlines during the Battle of the Caucasus.

Equipment, Uniforms, and Visual Features

The image offers an exceptional look at WWII Soviet naval aviation ordnance and ground handling procedures:

  • Il-4T Torpedo Bomber: Visible in the mid-ground is the Il-4T (a specialized torpedo-bearing variant of the DB-3F twin-engine long-range bomber), featuring a glassed-in nose navigator cabin and dorsal gunner turret.
  • 45-36AN Aerial Torpedo: In the foreground, Soviet naval ground crews push a specialized four-wheeled transport trolley carrying a 450 mm 45-36AN low-altitude aerial torpedo, carrying a high-explosive warhead designed for low-level torpedo strikes against enemy naval vessels.
  • Naval Ground Crew Attire: The Black Sea Fleet armorer technicians are dressed in standard Soviet naval work fatigues, heavy overcoats, and navy sailor caps (beskozyorka).
  • Bzyb Mountain Range: The background highlights the pristine, snow-covered peaks of the Bzyb Ridge, demonstrating the unique geographical setting of front-line Black Sea Fleet airfields in western Georgia/Abkhazia.

Black Sea Fleet Naval Aviation in 1942

Following the fall of Sevastopol in July 1942, Gudauta served as a crucial staging hub for Soviet naval bombers. Operating under constant threat of Axis interception and difficult mountainous weather, torpedo bomber crews of the 5th GMTAP flew night and day interdiction missions against German and Romanian maritime traffic, playing a vital role in preventing the resupply of Axis ground armies in the Caucasus.
