Capture of the Enigma

 

Capture of the Enigma: the German submarine U-boat U-110 surrenders to the British, with the result that for the first time in the hands of the Allies got a secret German Enigma cipher machine with codes, radiograms and other important documents.

U-Boat U-110 made two combat campaign, sinking three and damaging 2 sea transport. May 9, 1941 U-110 in the North Atlantic has been attacked by the 3rd British escort group (2 destroyers, 1 corvette), received injuries and was forced to surface in the vicinity of the British warships. The personnel of the submarine crew immediately left the sinking ship. 34 people were removed from the water, 14 sailors, including a commander, were killed. Abandoned submarine was captured by the British armed boarding party. So the legendary Capture of the Enigma fell into the hands of the Allies. Since then, the destruction of the German submarine fleet in the Atlantic was only a matter of time.

May 10, 1941 at 11 am U-110 sank while being towed (in another version, flooded by the British for the classification of the fact of capture of the submarine).
