Burned-out Grumman F6F Hellcat

 

A burned-out Grumman F6F Hellcat fighter aircarft in the hangar deck of a USS Saratoga (CV-3) aircraft carrier during World War II.

On February 21, 1945, near the island of Iwo Jima, the aircraft carrier “Saratoga” was attacked by a group of kamikaze aircraft “Mitate No. 2” consisting of 32 aircraft. As a result of this attack, the aircraft carrier was seriously damaged (123 people were killed, 192 wounded, 42 aircraft (including the Grumman F6F Hellcat) burned down or were thrown overboard) and went to the United States for repair.
