British fighter pilot Sergeant Charleston Howe, who fought on the Northern Front, was awarded the Order of Lenin for 3 downed German aircraft.
Behind the British sergeant Charleston Howe is the Hawker “Hurricane” fighter, one of two planes presented by British pilots to Soviet counterparts.
At the time of the photograph, Boris Safonov, Hero of the Soviet Union, was in the cockpit.
