  1. From Gebhard Aders ‘History of the German Night Fighter Force’ and other sources including the Rotterdam Commission, the FuG 240 Berlin1 was developed in the latter half of 1944 using the Field I and Field II T/R units, a motor-generator set of the Berlin A, FuG 220 display, and a display interface unit. Testing late 1944 appears to have shown up a significant ‘searching’ difficulty due to the narrow centimetric wavelength antenna beam with the 4-sector Lichtenstein type display. Hand controlled swivelling of the antenna was added, the designation becoming FuG 240 Berlin 1a, and test flying must have shown satisfactory operation in January 1945. Telefunken received an order for 25? sets of which 24 may have been produced with 10 actually delivered to the Luftwaffe. 4 sets were found in Junkers G6 aircraft and 1 on an airfield by the RAF in North Germany and Denmark. 3 aircraft were flown to Farnborough with 1 aircraft then test flown. Performance must have been judged ‘poor’ in comparison with the AI10 radar being used by the RAF, but it was adequate for attacking the massive RAF and USAAF bomber streams.
