The Battle of Nanjing is a battle of the Second Sino-Japanese War. It began after the retreat of Chinese troops from Shanghai on October 9, 1937, and ended with the capture of Nanjing by Japanese troops on December 13, 1937. The government of the Republic of China evacuated to Wuhan. After the withdrawal of Chinese troops to the other side of the Yangtze River, Japanese troops entered Nanjing. For several weeks, Japanese troops massacred, tortured and raped the people of Nanjing. The number of civilians killed is about 300,000
