High above wartime Europe:

This remarkable photograph captures a formation of B-17 Flying Fortress bombers flying at high altitude during one of the strategic bombing raids over Germany in late 1943.

The clear winter sky reveals long white contrails stretching behind the aircraft. In the distance, additional condensation trails mark the presence of Allied escort fighters, whose task was to protect the heavy bombers from attacks by the Luftwaffe.

The 390th Bomb Group:

The 390th Bombardment Group was one of the heavy bomber units of the Eighth Air Force, operating from bases in England against targets across occupied Europe and Germany.

Its B-17 Flying Fortresses participated in attacks on aircraft factories, rail junctions, oil facilities, military industries and other strategic objectives. Missions often lasted many hours and exposed crews to anti-aircraft fire, enemy fighters and harsh weather conditions.

Escort fighters change the air war:

By late 1943, the arrival of long-range escort fighters began to transform the strategic bombing campaign.

Aircraft such as the P-47 Thunderbolt, equipped with external fuel tanks, and later the P-51 Mustang, could accompany bomber formations much deeper into German-controlled airspace. Their presence significantly reduced bomber losses and forced the Luftwaffe into increasingly costly air battles.

The distant fighter contrails visible in this photograph illustrate the growing coordination between heavy bombers and escort fighters that became a defining feature of the Allied air offensive during the final years of the war.
