Amet-khan Sultan

Twice Hero of the Soviet Union, fighter pilot, Major of the Red Army Amet-khan Sultan (October 20, 1920 – February 01, 1971) during the Second World War.

In total, during the war, he made 603 sorties (of which 70 were for attacking enemy personnel and equipment), conducted 150 air battles, in which he personally shot down 30 and as part of a group of 19 enemy aircraft.
The title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 1136) to the squadron commander of the 9th Odessa Red Banner Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Guard, Captain Amet-khan Sultan, was awarded by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated August 24, 1943.
Second medal “Gold Star” (No. 66) Assistant Commander for Airborne Rifle Service of the 9th Odessa Red Banner Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 6th Guards Fighter Aviation Division (1st Air Force) of the Guard Major Amet-khan Sultan was awarded by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Of the USSR Council of June 29, 1945.
On February 1, 1971, Amet-khan Sultan died while performing a test flight on the Tu-16 flying laboratory, designed to test a new jet engine.
