Arrow tanker

 

The American Dixie Arrow tanker, torpedoed by a German Kriegsmarine U-71 submarine, is drowning in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the state of Virginia. The Dixie tanker was attacked 12 miles off the east coast of the United States in the Diamond Shoal area. Two torpedoes hit the ship and it sank for two hours. 11 crew members were killed in torpedo explosions and in fire fires, the remaining 22 were rescued by the destroyer “Tarbell” (DD 142).
