Lieutenant Dean E. Hallmark dropped bombs on the rolling mill, breaking through heavy anti-aircraft fire. The ego crew was the last to bomb targets in central Tokyo. When the plane ran out of fuel, American pilots made an emergency landing on the water off the coast of China. Two crew members (William J. Dieter and Donald E. Fitzmaurice) were killed, the rest reached the shore by swimming. On the shore, they were captured by the Japanese. Dean E. Hallmark was executed by the Japanese on October 15, 1942, while co-pilot Robert J. Meder died in captivity on December 1, 1943. Of the 5 crew members, only Lieutenant Chase J. Nielsen survived.
