April 18, 1943 in the area of Cape Bon (Tunisia) 60 German transport aircraft Junkers Ju-52 (Ju-52) under the cover of 21 Bf.109 and MC fighters. 202, during a flight to the island of Sicily, were attacked by aircraft of the 57th Fighter Group of the USAF and 314th Fighter Squadron of the RAF. In the battle, the Luftwaffe pilots lost 59 Ju-52s and 16 fighters, and the Americans lost 6 of the P-40 fighters. In this battle, Captain Roy E. Whittaker shot down three Ju-52s and one Messerschmitt Bf 109, and also damaged two more enemy aircraft.
