American officers of the US Army are considering the Russian bomber Pe-8 №42066 of the Red Army Air Force, equipped with AM-35A engines, on May 29, 1942 brought to Washington for negotiations, a delegation led by the People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs Vyacheslav Molotov.
First the delegation over the occupied countries of Europe flew to the UK for negotiations and fuel refueling, then flew to the USA with landings in Reykjavik (Iceland) and at the Canadian airbase Goose Bay. The commander of the ship was Endel Pusap, the second pilot – Vladimir Obukhov. After the talks on June 4, 1942, the aircraft started on the return journey and returned safely to Moscow. For the implementation of this flight, the entire crew of the Pe-8 bomber was awarded: the commander and navigator Alexander Shtepenko received the title of Heroes of the Soviet Union, the rest were awarded orders.
