A group of American North American B-25 Mitchell bombers, under the cover of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter, came across a large group of German Junkers Ju-52 transport aircraft in the Sicilian Strait. Of 35 Junkers Ju-52, the Americans shot down 25.
