Alexander Lipilin

 

Hero of the Soviet Union, flight commander of the 41st Fighter Aviation Regiment Senior Lieutenant Alexander Lipilin (January 18, 1913 – February 27, 2003) stands on the wing of a MiG-3 fighter aircraft.

By October 1941, Senior Lieutenant Alexander Lipilin made 112 successful sorties, shot down 9 enemy aircraft in air battles, burned more than 30 vehicles with ammunition on the ground, and destroyed 4 river crossings.
By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 24, 1942, for the exemplary performance of the combat missions of the command on the front of the fight against the Nazi invaders and the courage and heroism shown at the same time, Senior Lieutenant Alexander Alekseevich Lipilin was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold medal. Further Red Army Captain Alexander Lipilin served as the commander of the Air Cobra fighter squadron in the 3rd Aviation Regiment ( Seimchan), which was engaged in ferrying aircraft to the front line. Later, having already become a major, he commanded the 5th aviation regiment, carrying out the transfer of aircraft going under the Lend-Lease Act from the USA through Alaska to Siberia.
