Doris Miller

 

Admiral Nimitz rewards Doris Miller with a Naval Cross aboard the aircraft carrier Enterprise, for heroic actions aboard the battleship West Virginia during the attack of the Pearl Harbor base with a Japanese aircraft carrier.
Doris Miller became the first black sailor to receive this award during World War II.
Doris Miller went missing during the sinking of the Liscom Bay escort carrier after a torpedo hit a Japanese submarine I-175 on November 24, 1943.
