After the liberation of the surrounded Bautzen garrison on the evening of April 24, 1945, the 1st Fallschirm-Panzer Division Hermann Göring units moved northward, bypassing the city from the west. On April 25 and 26, 1945, there were fierce battles against the 1st Polish Tank Corps.
