A view of the burning Bunker Hill aircraft carrier (USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) from the board of the South Dakota battleship (USS South Dakota (BB-57).
May 11, 1945 “Bunker Hill” aircraft carrier (type “Essex”) was attacked by two kamikaze aircraft near the island of Okinawa. Japanese planes launched a ship attack at 30-second intervals. As a result, 372 soldiers were killed and 264 injured. In connection with the damage the aircraft carrier went to repair in the United States and did not take part in the hostilities.

In the foreground are universal five-inch guns and 20-mm Oerlikon anti-aircraft guns from the South Dakota battleship.
