In 500 sorties, Hans Philipp, nicknamed “Phipps”, scored 206 air victories, 178 of which on the Eastern Front and 29 against the Western allies. Philip was killed on October 8, 1943, his plane was shot down by an American P-47 fighter (pilot Robert S. Johnson).
