Soviet officers of the Red Army are posing near the burned Japanese lighthouse on Cape Kokutan of Shumshu Island (Kuril Islands).

At Cape Kokutan, the Japanese created a powerful anti-landing defense unit. The remains of his garrison, driven deep into the ground, capitulated only the day after the landing, on the evening of August 19, 1945.
