Beach on the island of Shumshu, where the landing of the Soviet amphibious assault took place. Cape Kotomari.
To the left is a grounded Soviet “Mariupol” tanker. The “Mariupol” tanker was used by the Japanese as an anti-aircraft battery: in addition to the weapons on it (one 102 mm gun, one 76.2 mm and four 20 mm guns), the Japanese placed about a dozen anti-aircraft guns on it, supposedly 8 cm Type 3 guns.

Location: Shumshu Island, Kuril Islands, USSR
