The Westerplatte peninsula near the free city of Danzig became the site of the heroic defense of the Polish soldiers of the Military Transit Warehouse, numbering more than 180 people from September 1 to 7, 1939. The death of 15 Polish soldiers during the defensive battle made a deep impression on the commander of the garrison Major Suharsky and he decided to surrender.
