November 25, 1941 in the Mediterranean Sea near the border of Egypt and Libya, the British Barham battleship (HMS Barham) was torpedoed by a German submarine U-331 (commander Lieutenant von Tiesengausen).
The submarine penetrated the escort of the destroyers and fired four torpedoes from a distance of 370 meters, three of which hit the Barham battleship. During the dive, the battleship’s ammunition detonated, causing a powerful explosion. 862 out of 1,150 crew members died.
