Jack Ross was one of the instructors who taught the Soviet pilots how to fly the British Hurricanes, which were supplied to the USSR from the UK under lend-lease.

Jack Ross participated in the Battle of Britain as part of the 17th squadron of the Royal Air Force, during which he shot down 2 German aircraft. After returning from the USSR, during a routine patrol flight on January 16, 1942, his plane fell into the Irish Sea due to engine failure, Jack Ross went missing.
