The pilot of the 77th Squadron of the 20th Fighter Group of the US Air Force, Major Merle J. Gilbertson, is looking through a hole in the glazing of the cockpit of his P-51 Mustang fighter, damaged during a raid on the German Esperstedt airfield in the German city of Gotha.

Not far from the plane of Major Merle J. Gilbertson, the German Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter exploded, its fragments damaged the cockpit glazing.
