The commander of the 6th Fighter Squadron (JG6) Luftwaffe Major Gerhard Barkhorn in the cockpit of his Fokke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 fighter.
Gerhard “Gerd” Barkhorn (March 20, 1919 – January 8, 1983) is the second most effective pilot of the Luftwaffe after Erich Hartmann. He made more than 1104 sorties and shot down 301 enemy aircraft on the Eastern Front, as part of the famous 52nd squadron, along with Erich Alfred Hartmann and Günther Rall.
