1st Lt. Robert H. Amon inspects damage to his P-38 Lightning fighter.
The aircraft was damaged by a close explosion of a Japanese 40mm anti-aircraft projectile during a P-38 reconnaissance mission over Iwo Jima. As a result of 1st Lt. Robert H. Amon was forced to lie on the reverse course. He was able to travel 700 miles back to his airfield on the Mariana Islands and successfully land his fighter.
