Launching the F6F Hellcat from the ship catapult

F6F Hellcat

US carrier-based fighter Grumman F6F Hellcat is launched from the hangar catapult of the aircraft carrier Yorktown (CV-10).

The photo is interesting because it shows the use of a hangar catapult, a device that has not found wide application. The hangar catapult managed to be delivered in the construction of six aircraft carriers of the Essex class (CV-10, CV-12-CV-14, CV-17 and CV-18). However, during the upgrades during 1943, all of them were dismantled, and in their place are placed two four-barreled anti-aircraft guns “Bofors”.
