Japanese soldiers taken prisoner after the capture of the island of Betio, entering Tarawa’s atoll.
From the Japanese garrison, numbering more than 5,000 people, including 1,200 Korean workers. From 17 to 35 Japanese soldiers surrendered, as well as more than a hundred civilians.
