German landing craft, the amphibious assault ship Typ Pilabo 41 (Pionier Landungsboot) No. 339 enters Pillau harbor (now Baltiysk, Russia). On board the ship are refugees and army transports evacuated from Heiligenbeil Pocket.
The Soviet 5th Guards Tank Army, advancing towards the Polish city of Elblag, near the town of Heiligenbail (now Mamonovo of the Kaliningrad Region of Russia) surrounded Wehrmacht units that defended East Prussia, forming the Heiligenbail Pocket.
