In the Mediterranean, on November 25, 1941, near the border of Egypt and Libya, the Barham battleship of the Royal Navy (HMS Barham) was torpedoed by a Nazi U-331 submarine (commander Lt. Tiesenhausen).
The submarine penetrated the escort of British destroyers and fired four torpedoes from a distance of 370 meters, three of which hit the Barham battleship. The ship lost its course and began to roll, and then lay down on the port side. During the dive, the battleship’s ammunition detonated, causing a powerful explosion. Killed 862 of more than 1,150 crew members.
