US Gambier Bay escort aircraft carrier (USS Gambier Bay (CVE 73) under the artillery fire of Japanese ships.
The photo shows an episode from a battle in Leyte Gulf (Philippines), when an unexpected collision of a combination of American escort aircraft carriers (Tuffy-3) and a Japanese linear navy occurred near the island of Samar. As a result of the battle near the island of Samar, the aircraft carrier Gambier Bay was sunk by artillery of Japanese heavy cruisers and battleships.

The photo was taken from the Kitkun Bay escort aircraft carrier (USS Kitkun Bay (CVE-71).
