American defensive positions, accidentally fell under the “friendly fire” – were bombed by their own aircraft.

In preparation for Operation Cobra on July 24, 1944, from 11.15 to 11.30, B-17 and B-26 planes from the 8th US Air Force bombarded the German positions on the front with a 6.5 km wide front. Part of the bombs fell on the American positions – “friendly fire” killed 111 and wounded 490 American soldiers from the 30th Infantry Division. The locality is Saint-Lo between Montreuil-sur-Lozon and Hébécrevon (Lower Normandy).
